The Central Otago branch line ran for 150kms between Clyde and Middlemarch passing through the towns of Clyde, Alexandra, Chatto Creek, Omakau, Lauder, Oturehua, Wedderburn, Ranfurly, Waipiata, Hyde, Middlemarch and on to Dunedin.

These towns, originally the major stops on the branch line, are the staging points for most Otago Rail Trail visitor - having been developed for tourism since the branch line became a public reserve. They provide the best selection of accommodation to be found on the Rail Trail, ranging from backpacker-style hostel and self-contained accommodation to B&Bs and luxury hotels.

Ophir, Becks, St Bathans, Naseby, Macraes Town and Kyeburn also provide the more adventurous visitor with a wider range of Rail Trail accommodation options - perfect for those wishing to get a little further off the beaten track and explore the quieter locations off the old Central branch line.
