The Central Otago branch line ran for 150kms between Clyde and Middlemarch passing through the towns of Clyde, Alexandra, Chatto Creek, Omakau, Lauder, Oturehua, Wedderburn, Ranfurly, Waipiata, Hyde, Middlemarch and on to Dunedin.

These towns, originally the major stops on the branch line, are the staging points for most Otago Rail Trail visitor - having been developed for tourism since the branch line became a public reserve.
