The Shaky Bridge lies adjacent to the Shaky Bridge Vineyard Café. The Shaky Bridge, constructed in 1878, is an icon in Alexandra and provides the inspiration for our branding. Our source vineyards are amongst the oldest in all of Central Otago. You can almost feel the pioneering spirit of those early settlers who built the bridge as you shake across it! That same pioneering spirit to plant Pinot Noir in the Alexandra basin more than thirty years ago, provides us with grapes for our wines today.
Shaky Bridge Wines first release was the 2003 Shaky Bridge Pinot Noir. Sourcing fruit from some of the oldest vines in Central Otago, and from a variety of vineyard parcels within the Alexandra Basin, the first Shaky Bridge release received instant international acclaim. Building on the winning formula established with our first wine, we added Pinot Gris, Gewurztraminer, Riesling and a Pinot Noir Rose to our Artisan Series portfolio in 2006. The release of a fresh and zesty styled Chardonnay in 2007 completed our goal of offering a variety of high quality, well priced wines that display the unique attributes of our vineyard sources. In 2008, we added the economically priced Pioneer Series wines to our Shaky Bridge brand family. Our Pioneer Series offers an entry point for wine lovers to sample the unique flavors of the Alexandra Basin and to introduce Shaky Bridge Wines at a more affordable price point. We have maintained our high quality standards with our second tier label. Stop in to relax in the shade of our trees and to look out across the Home Block vineyard. If Clyde is the end of your Rail Trail experience, there is no better spot to savor the triumph of finishing the Trail! Call ahead for us to arrange a picnic lunch for your group as you finish your ride! Once you’ve rested and need more nourishment, the Shaky Bridge Café is the best place in town to relive all your Rail Trail memories and enjoy more of our exceptional wines!
